How do i choose the right internal color?
The appearance of a color depends on its surroundings, so a color should be checked only with the other colors that will be present in the area being painted. Light colors will help lighten a dark or poorly lit room, and provide a psychological lift. Light colors also make walls and ceilings appear to be further away, and can be used to make small rooms appear larger and more open. Dark colors can give a room a dramatic look, and create a sense of intimacy. They can also make walls and ceilings appear to be closer, and can be used to make a large room appear smaller and more cozy.
A color's appearance is also affected by the sheen of the paint it's made in; for example, a color will look softer and more muted in a flat than a low sheen paint. Its generally advisable to paint high traffic areas in flat paint as they can hide marks and hand prints and are easier to clean than low sheen. Unless you're going for a very specific color scheme its generally advisable to paint ceilings and woodwork (frames windows) neutral colors while making the walls a bolder color. This gives the home 'picture frame' feel and leaves you the option changing the wall color later if you want a different look.
What about External colors?
When selecting exterior paint colors, take the fixed colors into account (like the roof, brick, stonework or any stained wood), and make sure all the colors look good together. A large, boxy house can be broken up by using a trim color that contrasts the body color. Light colors will help keep a home cooler in warmer climates, because they absorb less heat. Dark colors will help keep a home warmer in cooler climates, because they absorb more heat. Because light colored paint absorb less heat, they will generally last longer than darker colored paint. Some councils have restrictions on what colors can be used on house exteriors, so check this out before you make your choice.
What is a quality paint finish?
A quality paint finish is uniform, consistent, smooth, clean and straight. This is always a direct reflection of the level of effort that goes into the preparation. This means protecting surroundings from paint drops, repairing any cracks and plaster damage to increase the aesthetic and durability of the paint, and meticulous attention when it comes to the details in order to achieve the smoothest finish prior to applying paint.
Spray or brush?
Both. To achieve the smoothest finish on a new home, spraying is usually preferable for gloss finishes in conjunction with brushes and rollers for acrylic suraces. In the case of a repaint in a home with furniture, spraying would mean protecting all floors , windows, switches and furniture with plastic to prevent over spray. With brushes its still possible to visually achieve %90 of a spray finish with gloss.
How many coats of paint do you apply?
2-3 coats are the minimum depending on the needs of the project. Going from a dark color to a neutral white will require more coverage and vice versa.
